Sara Berman Exhibit Spread

Sara Berman Closet Exhibit is being spread to Sarasota, Florida

The Sara Berman Closet was first established by Maira Kalman and Alex Kalman, her daughter and grandson. The Sara Berman Closet is all of what was in her closet of course, but they weren’t so ordinary. In the interview with Maira Kalman she had explained that her mother was a person that liked things to be organized, didn’t like to tell her kids what to do, and didn’t like things to be the same way which she found unique and inspiring about her mother. If you looked at this closet you would see that Berman wasn’t a woman of many colors to wear. It was either white or beige. You remember when I said that Sara Berman isn’t such an ordinary person? Well, I wasn’t kidding. She had things in her house that were miniature, from kindergarten chairs to a low bed.

She wasn’t the same as everybody, she didn’t like being the same. She liked standing out with her beige and white colors and her unique style. Her life was not a life that someone would’ve thought would be possible and that’s what Maira Kalman loved about her mother and that is exactly why she made this museum. Because she wanted everybody to see the type of person her mother was. A beautiful, unique, extravagant, different, stylish person. Cause everybody had to see that person. So she brought it to people around the world to see and that’s what inspiration is.

This photograph is showing Maira writing down the start of her story next to her painting that she did herself. People would always think, how would a closet represent a person so well? This is because this closet is special and its not something you see in an everyday closet. It was different.

This has not only been displayed in the Met but was also displayed in a museum in a small alley made by Alex Kalman called the Mmuseum. Like his mother he uses this alley way to display small objects that have been saved by him that weren’t found in many places. Including a tattered wool blanket that was left behind by a Mexican Immigrant with some objects made by prison workers. He had closed the Mmuseum for some time and decided to open back up for the Sara Berman Closet.

Since The Sara Berman Closet became a hit in 2017, Maira Kalman had decided that she will reopen the exhibit in Sarasota, Florida. This has brought so much happiness to Maira and Alex and all the hard work was dedicated to the love they have for Sara Berman and her closet.
