Here’s a quick peek at the first season of the most innovative magic series in TV history.
You’ve heard of the wand-wavers, spell-sayers, and conjurers of blue sparks of healing. But have you heard of magical food? Just Add Magic adds a whole new look at the world of magic. And I’ll give you a tour of the first of four seasons. I’m pretty much spoiling the whole season, so if you want to watch it for yourself, the exit’s over there. Now let’s dive into a magical world of spices and friendship.
Three best friends, Kelly, Hannah, and Darbie, find a cookbook in Kelly’s attic when Kelly’s brother Buddy ruins the brownies for their senile grandma and runs off to the attic. They go down to the kitchen and search for a recipe to make in place of the ruined brownies. They find a recipe for Shut ‘Em Up Shortcake and start to make it. However, they’re missing an ingredient: Cedronian vanilla. Hannah searches it up but finds nothing. So they decide to go to the local cafe: Mama P’s.
They walk in and Jake, the employee at Mama P’s, asks them what they’re up to. The three friends ask Jake if he’s heard of Cedronian vanilla. Jake says. o, and asks Mama P. She says she has some in the back, and disappears into her office. After a while, she comes back with a bottle of liquid labeled Cedronian vanilla. The trio goes back to Kelly’s house and starts baking the shortcake.
Kelly and Hannah start cooking the shortcake while Darbie starts trying to throw paper balls into the trash. Kelly and Hannah make the batter, and all that’s left is to add the Cedronian vanilla. Darbie complains she did nothing, so she decides to put in the vanilla. That night at dinner, Kelly serves the cake to her family, but Buddy says he wants to hold it and starts yanking it out of her hand. The cake spills onto the floor, but Buddy sticks his hand in and eats some.
The next day, Buddy goes mute, and since Hannah took a piece home, she goes mute, too. Darbie can’t stop talking and sprains her leg. The trio cooks again to fix Darbie’s leg and Kelly loses mobility in her right hand. The basketball tryouts have Kelly as captain, but she gave it up to Charlotte, a classmate, and got her arm fixed.
So the trio find out that Grandma was cursed, and keep cooking to find a way to break the curse. I’m going to fast forward to a part I really love: the Pluot Festival.
So the town the trio (called protectors) live in is called Saffron Falls. The protectors now know that Grandma Becky was a protector along with Mama P and Ms. Silvers, the scariest woman in town. Saffron Falls is known for pluots, a hybrid between a plum and an apricot. Kelly finds a recipe in the book called Curse-Breaking Candied Stone Fruit. Kelly asks Mama P for help, and she tells them that if they increase the does to 500, everyone will take a tiny bit of the curse instead of Kelly taking a big price and being cursed forever. They use pluots to make the recipe, and Mama P tells them that Grandma Becky has to eat the first and the last pluot.

Hannah doesn’t agree and goes to Kelly’s mom and tells her that they stole from gardens, snuck into houses, and other things. Kelly gets grounded, but uses Darbie as a double using Walk-In-My-Shoes Schnitzel. Kelly uses it to sneak out and start making the stone fruit, while Darbie acts like Kelly to please her mom.
Hannah visits Mama P’s, sees Kelly, and tries to stop her. Mama P pushes her away and kicks her out of the store. Hannah sits down, but her brain starts to think about the closings around Saffron Falls. She realizes that all the shutdowns are the fault of Mama P, and that she’s using Kelly for her own gain.
Hannah rushes to Kelly’s house to tell Darbie what’s going on. Darbie tries to break in to Mama P’s but gets found by Mama P who eats the first pluot, hijacking the spell, and traps her in the pantry. Kelly heads home and gets grounded even more by her mom.
Kelly, not knowing of the hijacking, gives her grandma the first bite, but she comes home late and is extra grounded, along with the fact that her grandma is leaving for New York in 2 days.
The next day, the Pluot Festival is in full swing, and the pluots are going fast. Jake is helping serve them until Hannah grabs him to help her search for Darbie. They find her in Mama P’s pantry and free her. They all make protective shakes and try to give one to Kelly, but she dumps it out. Mama P gives a speech and prepares to curse the town with the last pluot. Jake, in a moment of selflessness gives Kelly his drink. Kelly, crying, drinks it with the others.
The whole town is frozen except for the three protectors, who go to Kelly’s house to try and cook up a spell to unfreeze the town. They use the physical spice werpoes, the time spice taurian, and the mobility spice lapsis to break the spell and make a three-layered cake, with each layer a different spice.
Once they finish, they look at the book and see that the recipe has been written into the book, in their handwriting! The only thing missing is the title, which Kelly calls Last Ditch Layer Cake. They bring the cake to the festival.
They get the the festival when Miss Silvers offers up the most powerful spice in the world to strengthen the cake. But the trio turns it down, as they believe that the cake is strong enough without it.
The trio eats the cake and the curse on the town breaks, Grandma Becky’s spell breaks, and Miss Silver’s spell also breaks, even though the trio didn’t know she was cursed.
The season ends with Becky asking whether all curses were broken, and a glimpse of a boy getting off the Ferris Wheel. It’s certainly a cliffhanger, and it gives way to a whole other season. If you watch this series, you will really get addicted. If you don’t have Amazon Prime, you can find every episode of every season on YouTube. But nevertheless, whether it’s Prime or YouTube, go watch it right now. I insist.
